Your Weekly Pinch of AI Insights

Great morning Needlers and welcome to the first 2024 edition of our AI Newsletter. 2023 will always be special for me for a lot of reasons and starting this newsletter is one of them. At Needle, we have set some goals already for this year but adding value to our readers and keeping them up to date about the AI world will always be our priority.
Maybe I am overthinking this but 2024 might bring a lot of law suits and the next battle might be between New York Times and Apple 😉. Well, 2024 is off for a better start for now as apple launched their AI model.. thus a law suit.. shhh...🤫. If you know, you know... if not, read our last edition. This news made me google if Samsung is also working on their model, and guess what they are. Apparently, there was a data leak also but we don’t need to get into that. Let’s kick start this year with some exciting news. .shall we…
Here’s what we got for you today:
Humanoid Robots Join Workforce
Money making machine : OpenAI
Apple Unveils Ferret
Web app in 5 minutes using GPT Engineer
My knowledge of robots is from movies, but real-world robots are getting to work, like in this IEEE Spectrum article. It explains how humanoid robots, like Agility Robotics' Digit, are starting to do jobs in warehouses, such as moving items. These robots are designed to work in environments where traditional automation is challenging. They're not replacing humans but doing repetitive tasks, letting people focus on more complex work. It's like robots are finally clocking in for their shifts!
Microsoft backed OpenAI did $100 million in last three months of 2023 and reached 1.6 billion mark. Not bad at all for a company initially founded as a non profit. Also, fun fact it was also decided that all the initial investors can only make up to 100x ROI, which also changed now. I guess ‘Money does changes everything’. Maybe all this non-profit BS was just for PR, but we have seen this before across industries, and we still fall for it. The guy who is mimicking the brain sure knows how to play with it 😉
Whatever everyone does, apple does it better. Ferret, an open source AI model which bridges Vision and NLP. Isn’t that great, they never fail to surprise. The model uses dual-encoder architecture, one encoder focuses on the visual aspects, while the other handles the textual input. Unlike other AI models, Ferret when trained on GRIT(method to evaluate how well a chatbot can handle complex and varied tasks), significantly outperformed previous multimodal LLMs on tasks requiring region-based understanding and localisation during conversational chatting.
When I was in my masters, building web apps was tough. GPT-Engineer changes that. First, sign up for access. Then, use a prompt like "Build a photo gallery web app" to start. GPT-Engineer creates code for you, which you can then tweak and test. When it's right, you publish your app online. Lastly, you can even ask it to add specific features, like a login system. It's like having a code genie – just wish for a web app, and voila!
